August 17th

Just a quick update on the political situation.  At the last minute late yesterday, the civil society leaders postponed the protests scheduled for today.  UN Mediators have arrived and met with government representatives and human rights groups.  This is after a formal report was published showing that police used excessive force during the protests on July 20th.

Tensions have been running high the past few weeks – yesterday Blantyre shops were boarded up like there was a hurricane coming.  NGOs and embassies were closed today as a precaution.

It is hopeful that the dialogue will be productive and will result in reform.  Should progress not be made, protests are provisionally rescheduled for September 17th.
